There are many things worth caring about, building relationships, leaving a legacy, becoming the person you want to be, spending time with your family, reading books, and enjoying beautiful music. However appearing smart isn’t one of them. Here is why.
Appearing smart is completely based off of what other people think. It has everything to do with opinions and little to do with substance. When Walt Disney started pursuing animation he was fired from the Kansas City Star in 1919 because, his editor said, he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. Although Disney wasn’t viewed as smart he kept the focus on what really mattered to him.
Better than appearing smart is having a sense of curiosity, a desire to learn, pursuing something that you love. Better than appearing smart is being kind to those around you. Better than appearing smart is having the ability to forgive. Better than appearing smart is being passionate about a cause. Better than appearing smart is being able to face your fears. Better than appearing smart is having a good work ethic.
Appearing smart is without substance. Who cares if others view you as someone of intelligence. Who are you without their stamp of approval?
Often when we focus on being portrayed as someone who is smart we lose sight of what really matters. We begin to depend on the approval of others opinions. Being viewed as smart isn’t going to make you successful but taking the initiative, persevering, and having focus will. Rise above opinions and focus on the things that make you come to life.
