I’m sick. The guilty actor: the virus of ‘I wish’ language.
Today I was talking to a friend of mine and they made the comment that they had spent countless hours and nights thinking about writing a book.
Which to me translated to, “I spent countless hours and nights thinking about taking action.”
When I asked them what their book would be about they responded with lots of passion and enthusiasm. Their enthusiasm was brought to a close when they made the comment, “I just haven’t decided to do it yet.” In my mind I thought, who is going to decide for you?
The ‘I wish’ illness is one that is faced by Americans daily. There is only one cure and that is to know that you are the only person who can decide what you do. You have complete responsibility for your goals, your interactions, your successes, and your failures. Any attempt to push that responsibility on someone else is the fastest way to spiral into toxic victimhood.
This agency is the best and only ingredient in the cure. Because the choice is completely up to you.
When you own the sole responsibility of achieving your goals, it simply becomes a matter of when.
