Openmindedness: the bait and switch

Being openminded is all the rage.

It almost seems as though you can’t be a good person without being openminded.

However, I hold an opposing view.

I don’t think being openminded is even a trait worth pursuing.

A person who is truly openminded has quite nearly stripped himself of his humanity. His unique ideas and beliefs. A truly openminded person will say, “I care not whether he commits murder.” A truly openminded person will say, “I don’t care whether you kill me or let me live.” A truly openminded person will say, “I don’t care if you give me chocolate or vanilla.”

Is this a trait we should be intensely focused on mastering?

Personally, I’m thankful that there are very few people who are truly openminded.

And those who typically describe themselves as open-minded and tolerant, are neither especially openminded nor are they especially tolerant. They are often quite ready to deliver their ultimatums and established opinions.

Ironically, those who consider themselves to be open-minded seem to be the most likely to push their opinion on you. Making their openminded worldview the supreme rule of law.

I urge you to analyze the fascination with openmindedness. The romanticization of openmindedness that is given by others thinly coatings the true impact.

Instead of aspiring to be openminded aspire to be curious.

You are an individual, someone with strong opinions and traits. How you view things, what you believe, is who you are.

Take your curiosity and be analytical, perceptive, conversational and intrigued.
