We all have opinions.
Often we hold opinions very tightly. Viewing them as a representation of ourselves. A representation of our intellect, of our IQ, and status.
And when someone purposes an opposing opinion to the one you hold, how do we tend to react?
Speaking from personal experience I know I can often react with a quick abrasive dismissle.
However, I’ve grown to think that the faster you react, the less you think.
A quick reaction often labels an entire idea as wrong. Overlooking the gems of truth within. Instead of labeling an idea as bad, seek to understand and find value in what you would have immediately dismissed.
I experienced the benefit of taking some time to think about an idea before criticizing it even today. While out with friends we were discussing the importance of personal ownership. A point was brought up that in my mind I immediately thought ” that’s wrong”. However, I held my tongue and thought about it for a moment and was able to come around and see some truth to what they were saying.
Taking some time to think about an idea before criticizing it doesn’t mean you can’t acknowledge or see what’s wrong with it. But allows you a moment before immediately reacting to see gems of usefulness that can transform your life.
Often people have an idea that they have given a lot of thought, sometimes weeks or even years. And we give it just a few moments. Think deeply before criticizing.
