a practical superpower

I don’t typically enjoy watching TV shows or movies as much as I enjoy reading. However, there are a handful of movies and TV shows that are exceptions to this rule.

The Sherlock series by BBC is one of those acceptions. Growing up I loved Sherlock Holmes. I had a massive book that was the complete collection of all the classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Every story from The Adventure of the Dancing Man to The Adventure of the Speckled Band fascinated me.

The primary thing that fascinated me was how perspective Sherlock Holmes was. He could identify incredible things about people without the person verbally identifying these truths or Sherlock directly asking. This ability, although unrealistically concentrated in Sherlock Holmes, is something I strive to develop and acquire.

A realistic implementation of this superpower is in the form of listening and mirroring.

Mirroring is a concept discussed in “Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It” by Christopher Voss and Tahl Raz. Mirroring is the practice of repeating back the key 3-4 words of the last sentence of the person who is speaking.

I purposefully practiced mirroring for the first time on Thursday.
