It’s the little things

My landlord has a unique love language: email.

Let me explain.

In the book “The Five Love Languages”  the author Gary Chapman, distinguishes different ways to express appreciation or love that serves the preferences of others.

It’s often through the little things like being considerate, seeking to understand, and making others feel heard that impact people the most. I personally love to make other people feel special, that’s a love language by itself.

Once again we are reminded of the importance of communication. This book is great to gain more clarity through communication. What can we do to be more effective in your efforts to make others feel loved?

Gary Chapman divides up the different love languages into words of affirmation, acts of service, affection, quality time, gifts. But he missed one thing, email.

Let me add a little context, our landlord loves to send emails. She’s an elderly woman in her late 60’s who enjoys gardening and playing solitaire. Because these are her primary hobbies she is on the computer around 40% of the day. So she replies, and expects replies, to emails quickly and often.

Having noticed these habits I decided to gain some social capital by devising a plan.

Here’s how it went:

“Hi Virginia,
Just wanted to send a warm email of appreciation for your flowers. Your diligence in caring for them is remarkable. I enjoy seeing them grow!
{see picture in header}
All the best,
Elizabeth”
to which she replied
“Thank you so much for your kind thoughts.  As you can probably tell, it’s my passion!
The pictures are great.”
We know that everyone is unique so let’s treat them accordingly. These small interactions put a smile on my face without fail. Remeber, it truly is the little things.
