3 Ways to Convince Me to Your Side

I spend a good amount of time talking to people.

Often in conversation, new ideas will be presented. I don’t always agree with these ideas, and that’s ok.

However, if you want some inside insight on how to make a compelling case, and convince me to your side, here are 3 tips.

  • Show historical precedence. I believe history is our greatest teacher. If there’s an example of the principle, idea or theory you’re suggesting and it’s been successfully implemented before use it. This helps establish a great level of credibility. If you feel that your idea has never been done before and no historical evidence exists, I’d encourage you to search a little further. There’s likely similar themes, if not principles that have been executed in the past.

  • Implementable. I don’t like pies in the sky. I want the pie. Show and explain how the pie is attainable. Can I take action right now to make progress to achieve your proposal? Make it real, show actionable steps of progress.

  • Logical. If your plan doesn’t make logical sense, it’s hard to follow. Additionally, if I’m trying to piece together the logic of your plan because it hasn’t been presented clearly, I’m going to be adding in my own assumptions. Map out the logic of your proposal so you can present your idea in the way you intended, not depending on the interpretation of the listener.

These tips apply to most conversation when you’re trying to convince others, not exclusively me. Use these pointers for the next time you present an idea and want to convince others to your side.
