Gain Support By Explaining The Why

People want to be respected.

You want to be able to deliver instructions and comments to an increasingly supportive audience. This is a desire that is felt on a daily basis, especially when in a position of leadership.

So, how can you incentivize others to respect and support your comments?

Explain the why.

If people know where you’re coming from with your suggestions and requests, they’re going to be more receptive.

For example, if someone tells you to increase the categorization of reports, you might initially view this as simply more work, in addition to your already full plate. However, if they were to explain the why behind it, to save future work or increase the productivity of your team, you’re much more likely to respect and support their decision.

This makes sense when we’re on the receiving end, we like to know the why.

So when on the delivering end, get in the habit of providing your reasoning with requests and suggestions.
