What you say matters.
But congruently, how you say what you say matters.
Here are some keys to articulating your thoughts in a clearer manner.
- Lay your cards on the table
Be clear with the intent behind what you are saying.
Before you say what you’re going to say, outline what (A) your true intentions are
(B) what your intentions are not, or how they shouldn’t perceive the following comment.
Use this opportunity to address any elephants in the room or misconceptions. And really take the time to make it clear, and clear up any misconceptions. Your audience does not automatically know the intent behind what you say, so don’t assume they do.
2. Frame it
Framing is an art. If you can master this art you have a far superior. Frame your perspective in terms of your audience’s values and priorities.
3. Say it
Even if you don’t feel like smiling – do it.
Keeping your hands engaged and your body language relaxed is going to be of tremendous aid to how your message is received.
Remember, every communication flub is an area for opportunity. Lay your cards on the table. Frame It. Say it.
