Registering to Vote

Today I registered to vote.

Although I’ve been politically active in the past by attending multiple state conventions, local caucus meetings and interning at the Utah State Capitol for 4 years, registering to vote wasn’t something I was in a hurry to do.

I was looking forward to it, however, it simply wasn’t an urgent matter.

This week I decided now was the time.

After searching for the appropriate steps online I quickly found and filled out the form.

The next steps were to physically print out and mail the form in, which seemed incredibly inefficient but it’s the government – so what do you expect. I decided to hand in the form myself and make a trip out of it.

The election office is in the San Francisco city hall building, and it was my first time visiting. The landscape was truly a beautiful sight and reminded me a little of Utahs capitol.

Because registering to vote is an activity that is so strongly promoted, often in my mind for the wrong reasons, it became apparent to me that I wanted to be purposeful with why I was registering to vote.

Side note: I think in general it is very good practice to be purposeful with everything that you do.

After turning in the form I started walking to my work which is off Market Street while asking myself the question, “What does success look like for me as a voter?”

On the way to Market Street, I passed through many homeless people, one of which was actively using drugs. Immediately I was reminded of one purpose of what I wanted to accomplish with the power of my vote.

I want to use my vote to make the world a freer and more prosperous place.
