Disclaimer: In no way do I claim to have a comprehensive understanding of what the role of an editor is like.
Today I simply had a new realization about the skills needed for the role of editor.
When I’ve edited peoples work in the past I’ve often subconsciously and consciously tried to shape their writing in a way that makes sense to me. My objective was to align their content with my worldview.
When I edit I’m injecting what Elizabeth Beeli thinks into it.
This is incorrect.
Editing is not about aligning the content with your worldview but is focused on the thought of the original writer. How are their ideas showcased and how can you help that be articulated clearly?
Personally, this presents quite a challenge.
Of course, there is a place for your opinions and evaluating whether the original author is saying is logical or not, but that is not the home of an editor.
