Trust is a foundational building block for strong relationships.
Questions can empower and build trust as well as subtract trust from a relationship.
In the context of a team, it’s essential to have trust established so you can delegate responsibilities and function with confidence that each member is acting to the best interest of the team.
If you repetitively ask a question to make sure something has happened you’ve likely done two things wrong:
- Not been clear with your initial ask
- Displayed a lack of trust
By asking a question multiple times you communicate “I don’t trust you” and “I don’t think you’re competent.”
To solve for this, be very clear with your initial ask. Check with the recipient to make sure they understand what exactly is asked of them and explain the why behind it.
And the hardest part, let them fail if need be.
