Missing Buses & Missing Opportunity

A man ran past me to catch the bus.

Before he could reach it the bus’ doors closed and began to drive away. Disgusted the man visibly frustrated turned with a furrowed brow and started walking the opposite direction of the departing bus.

A woman, who happened to be walking alongside me, pointed behind the man and said, “The bus is stopping, turn around and run to catch it.”

With a look of surprise, he turned around and ran after the bus. To my surprise, he caught up to it, boarded and rode away.

The women and I were close enough that turned and said to her “He wouldn’t have caught the bus had you not said anything.”

She said, “It’s the worse feeling to be so close and miss it like that.”

I told her that her actions inspired me. I left that interacting looking for an opportunity to encourage someone else to continue trying after feeling like you were so close and just missed it.

Often, when we miss an opportunity, we have another. The challenge is whether or not we change our behavior to take the next one.
