“Every Christian would agree that a man’s spiritual health is exactly proportionate to his love for God.”
– C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
In his book “The Four Loves” C.S. Lewis describe the four types of loves.
Storge – empathy bond (affection)
Philia – friend bond
Eros – romantic love
Agape – unconditional “God” love
Storge love is affection. And teaches us 1) notice 2) endured 3) smile 4) enjoy and finally to 5) appreciate. I found this progression to be quite accurate.
Philia love is friendship. This is the least jealous of love. Two friends delight to be joined by a third, and fourth if newcomers are qualified to become a friend.
Eros love is romantic. But lawless Eros loves the beloved over happiness. Better this than parting. Better to be miserable with her than happy without her. Let our hearts break provided they break together. I found this to be quite the opposite view of our culture.
Agape love, in God, has no hunger or needs to be filled, only plenteousness that desires to give.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, I would rate it a 5.3.
