Two Gems – The Hunger Games

In any given book there are a handful of sentences that stand out to me like gems to a miner.

As I devour the book I savor these treats.

I recently read the first book in the Hunger Games, here are two gems that stood out to me.

Oh, well, I think. There will be twenty-four of us. Odds are someone else will kill him before I do.

Of course, the odds have not been very dependable of late.”

There’s a tasteful nod here to the underlying theme of the odds and its volatility.

“In District 12, looking old is something of an achievement since so many people die early. You see an elderly person, you want to congratulate them on their longevity, ask the secret of survival.”

A creative way of emphasizing the challenges of life in the district.
