Five Lessons From My First Week Of Teaching English

1. The attention span of a child in the afternoon is a fraction of what it is in the morning.

2. If you give a child a sticker early on in class they are distracted and less engaged the rest of the class, especially for younger students.

3. The smaller the kid the, generally, harder time they have focusing. Making rustling noises with the flash cards, shouting and then going quite with the words, saying the words progressively faster are all ways to help them feel more engaged with you.

4. Create opportunities for kids to shine by calling them up to quiz them on the flash cards and give them a sticker.

5. Kids are constantly mimicking you. Be deliberate about your actions to help them remember the words, hand motions etc., and portray the energy and positivity you’d want them to experience. It’s scary how much your example impacts them.
