Belgium does have the best waffles.
But besides that, not much to write home about.
Eats
- Cappuccino – The first thing I did in Belgium was get a waffle, and the waffle quality only went up from here. This item felt like something straight out of Elf—dripping in chocolate syrup and sprinkles with a side of ice cream, whipped cream, and two candies on top.
- The Blue – In a very touristy part of town, which likely contributed to its quality, the iconic Flemish stew and mussels were extremely mediocre. The fries were the best part.
- Boulangerie Anneessens – This was quite an experience. This boulangerie had an incredible range of pastries. I got a few standard items, like a croissant, and then the most unusual pastry I’ve ever encountered—it had chicken, spices, walnuts, and was definitely Middle Eastern-inspired.
- Delirium – This is a must-visit in Belgium. Situated in an alley next to the iconic Manneken Pis statue (which, as one of Belgium’s highlights, tells you about all you need to know about why missing Belgium on your travel list isn’t a huge loss). The beer selection is world-class, with over 2,008 choices. I had the first beer I’ve ever wanted to order a second of—a wheat, fruity 4.5% passion fruit beer for 6.10. I was sad to find that the same item ordered from the Delirium Café in Asheville, NC, didn’t taste at all similar.
- Pasta Hal – I can’t recommend the food, offerings of sad pasta and quinoa vegetable stew, but the employees were beyond nice.
- Neuhaus – High-quality chocolatier.
- Galet – The best waffles ever. The dough is so thick they roll it out.
Sights
- Grand palace – Impressive square with a lot of intricit architecture to take in. Beautiful gold detailing.
- Les Gaaleries Royales Saint Hubert – Massive shopping center that’s fun to walk around.
- St. Michael anad St Gudula Cathedral – Stunning Cathedral.
- Atomium – Such an unusual structure, quite striking.
- Parc du Cinquantenaire – Stunning park, sprinkled with waffle stands.
I was impressed with the subway system, both reach, ability to navigate, and design were above average.
How many times did I mention waffles in this guide?
