Strasbourg & Colmar France Guide

Colmar is such a cute town, serving as the inspired for the homes in Studio Ghibli’s hit Howl’s Moving Castle.

Another item of note, on the drive to Strasbourg we encountered a VENDING machine at a gas station (ZG Raiffeisen Tankstelle Elsässer Str. 3, 77694 Kehl, Germany) that dispensed dry noodles, honey, jam, and eggs (unrefrigerated of course).

Colmar

Eats

  • Restaurant Pfeffel – Flammkuchen (their version of pizza) with goat cheese and honey.

Sights

  • St. Martin’s Church – This church features an incredibly intricate, green-tiled roof.
  • La Petite Venise – A charming spot in the Italian district overlooking the canal.
  • Marché Couvert Colmar – An old market, and the only place I have ever found green carrots for sale.
  • The Pfister House – The facade showcases paintings inspired by the Bible and Old Testament, along with portraits of Germanic emperors. It’s an example of early Renaissance architecture and one of the most beautiful bourgeois homes in the area.
  • The House of Heads – Known for its facade adorned with 106 face sculptures.
  • The Koifhus – This medieval edifice is easily recognizable by its green ceramic-tiled roof.
  • Statue de la Liberté – Dedicated on July 4, 2004, to mark the 100th anniversary of Bartholdi’s death, this replica of the Statue of Liberty commemorates its sculptor, Auguste Bartholdi, who was born in Colmar!
