Derisking: The Missing Piece Between Blimps And Manhattan

There was a time where instead of ominous drones in New Jersey’s skies there were leisurely blimps.

It was the 1930s and blimps were viewed as the future of transportation.

Thank goodness that didn’t happen.

The investors funding the construction of the Empire State Building decided to instruct their engineers to add a BLIMP MAST (!!) to dock airships atop the building.

All those blimps in New Jersey, keep sailing on to Manhattan!!

Only one blimp ever attempted to dock and after a three minute fight with the 40-mile-an-hour wind, the pursuit was dropped.

As this video demonstrates, the challenges of mooring airships in any kind of unfavorable weather is immense.

That simple experiment was either not done or ignored.

And although it’s wonderful to bet on the future and take risks, de-risking is imperative to do so wisely.
