Charles Rolls

Once upon a time, a family in England had three sons.

The youngest was named Charles Stewart Rolls.

To give you an idea of the kind of family he came from, when Charles went off to college, he became the first undergraduate to own a motorcar. Yet, this was not just due to his family’s affluence but also because of an innate passion he possessed for building.

At university, he studied mechanical engineering, and in his free time, he raced cars, clocking, what was then, a world record speed of 83 miles per hour.

Despite his wealth, motoring was one of the most expensive hobbies one could pursue. So, with a friend, Claude Johnson, he began importing and selling Peugeot motorcars from France and Minerva motorcars from Belgium.

Encompassing many a conversation I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for.
