Esteem

It’s the year 1832, and you read the campaign announcement of one Abraham Lincoln for a second term at the Illinois State Legislature.

He states that his chief desire is to be “esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem.”

On the next page you see a political cartoon of “King Andrew the First”.

The reason for this depiction? Primarily because he vetoed the rechartering of the Second Bank of the United States. He believed it was unconstitutional, and favored a few elite over the common people.

Was this not an action worthy of esteem?
