Listening is one of the most active things you do.
Although, it may seem counter-intuitive listening, being completely still without distractions, is mentally incredibly active.
Often when we think of something being active we think of physical activity. For example, Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that requires you to be physically active. However, listening requires a lot of mental activity.
Your mind is the greatest tool you have, but channeling it in a focused manner is difficult. Most likely, you’re getting a notification on your phone every few minutes, it is easier now than ever to be distracted. Add the distraction of technology to the regular distractions you face on a regular day, likely the different sounds and people around.
To keep mental distractions at bay takes practice and incredible discipline.
Building this mental focus starts with accepting a basic truth. You can not listen when you are distracted.
