Why It’s Important To Experiment

Experiments are fact finding missions that inch you closer to truth.

This is a phenomenal definition provided in the book Creativity, Inc by Ed Catmull. This definitional is pure wisdom, along with the majority of the books contents, and I can’t help but smile when I read it thinking of the experiments I’ve run.

When you experiment, any outcome is good.

If it goes well and proves your initial theory right, that’s great.

If it goes in a different direction you are brought a little closer to the truth and change directions.

Because when innovating the initial direction we choose is often the wrong one. And as you compare the results to your desired outcome, you must experiment to find the right direction.

Our desire to have the initial direction be the right one places an enormous amount of pressure on you making it hard to commit. However, when you know you can take a mission that inches you closer to truth you can be filled with confidence.
