The Under Hand Free Throw

I don’t care much for basketball.

But I do enjoy Revisionist History. A fantastic podcast by Malcolm Gladwell debunking the overlooked and the misunderstood.

The topic of his episode, “The Big Man Can’t Shoot” underscores an example of human behavior not following the best possible practice but what we are most easily persuaded to do.

To summarize, if basketball players threw underhanded at the free throw line they would score significantly more times then if they threw overhanded. But do they do it? No.

Why?

It looks weird.

They don’t wan’t to be the odd ones out, and no one else is doing it!

The best ideas don’t always win, but you could be the early adopter, the tipping point, that changes that.
