My friends are my superiors.
They lead by example and in turn help me become the person I want, and need, to be.
For example, I lead a weekly group discussion.
For a while, the engagement from the group has been an area I’d like to see improve.
To increase engagement a new structure was introduced: each person takes a turn leading the group.
What has the result been? Better than I could have imagined.
Besides the obvious that when you’re responsible for leading you are automatically more engaged, the unique leading style of each person showcased strengths that point out areas I an improve.
Where my style tends to be a tight agenda, ensure we end on time and with every question answered, it didn’t necessarily result in the best discussion for the group.
It was important reminder for me and embodied on one of my favorite quotes.
“In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him.”― Ralph Waldo Emerson
