Career Advice: Passions

Should you follow passions, ditch them, or save them for your free time?

Contrary to the commonly given advice to follow your passion, which assumes you know your passion and most receiving that advice do not, here are two guiding principles:

  1. Be comfortable starting small.
If you’re in a position where you’re lucky enough to know what your passion is (what you want to do) don’t be afraid to take small steps to get there. For example if you want to be a reporter some small steps could be to cover a school event and join the newsletter committee.
  2. Develop your passion.
If you don’t know what you want to do, work on developing your passions. Treat it like you would when choosing an ice cream flavor at a new place, taste a few options to see what you like. And as you dig in maybe the flavor is a great fit and you’ll grow to enjoy it more and more or the pleasantry quickly fades and you find it’s time to move on.

You’ve only got one life, don’t die without living.
