Principles

Title: Principles

Recommendation: 8.4/10

Summary:

Bridgewater Associates has a loud reputation in the workplace, candid, transparent, and argumentative. These are deliberate principles that guide the organization, as well as the personal life of Ray Dalio.

Regardless of whether you like Ray’s principles, deliberately considering principles to guide your own life is an immensely valuable exercise.

Highlights:

It’s nonsense and senseless to have making money as your goal as money has no intrinsic value. Its value comes from what it can buy, and it can’t buy everything.

In retrospect, the crash was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It gave me the humility to balance aggressiveness. Shifting my mindset from “I’m right” to “How do I know I’m right?”

Highest level of success as a leader: orchestrate others to do things well without you.

Satisfaction of success doesn’t come from achieving goals but from struggling well.

Create a culture where it is okay to make mistakes and unacceptable not to learn from them.

Putting comfort ahead of success produces worse results for everyone.
