On Stepping Up

What do you do when you’re stepping up into a new role with increasing responsibilities?

First, don’t fake anything.

Obviously, you shouldn’t be faking things no matter what type of role you’re in. However the tendency to fain understanding is much greater if you’re feeling pressure and want to earn short term respect.

It’s very off putting to see a person faking knowledge they don’t possess.

True authority and leadership come from know who you are and not pretending to be anything else

Ask questions you need to ask, admit without apology what you don’t know, and do the work to learn what you need to learn as quickly as you can.

In short, this means leading with humility.

Long term success is not viable if you pretend to be someone you’re not or know something you don’t.
